ONTOLOG (a.k.a. “Ontolog Forum”) is an open, international, virtual community of practice devoted to advancing the field of ontology, ontological engineering and semantic technology, and advocating their adoption into mainstream applications and international standards.

In computer science and information science, an ontology is a formal naming and definition of the types, properties, and interrelationships of the entities that really or fundamentally exist for a particular domain of discourse. It is thus a practical application of philosophical ontology, with a taxonomy. An ontology compartmentalizes the variables needed for some set of computations and establishes the relationships between them. The fields of artificial intelligence, the Semantic Web, systems engineering, software engineering, biomedical informatics, library science, enterprise bookmarking, andinformation architecture all create ontologies to limit complexity and to organize information. The ontology can then be applied to problem solving.
What We do
Members of this community participate in these activities:
- Discuss practical issues and strategies associated with the development and application of both formal and informal ontologies..
- Identify ontological engineering approaches that might be applied to the UBL effort, as well as to the broader domain of eBusiness standardization efforts.
- Strive to advance the field of ontological engineering and semantic technologies, and to help move them into main stream applications.
